Dick Locher R.I.P.
My friend Patrick Owsley alerted me that Dick Locher, one of our very favorite artists, passed away at 88! Dick and I had a long chat about his Ronald McDonald painting series from 1970, after I picked one up. Kroc hired him, after trying to get Norman Rockwell. Locher exceeded expectations, just as he did with Dick Tracy! I look at his Ronald painting every day. Rest in peace. #dicklocher #chicagotribune #naperville #dicktracy #ronaldmcdonald #raykroc

Dick Locher to end his 32 year run on DICK TRACY
On March 14th, the DICK TRACY comic strip will have a new team working on it. Dick Locher has decided to move on and do some other things BUT will continue doing editorial cartoons.
Dick and I talked about his McDonald's paintings. I have an alternate version of the painting above that he painted the boy on the left as a white boy. He said Ray Kroc wanted to get Norman Rockwell to do the paintings and somehow found his way to him.
Dick's TRACY work will be missed. My parents recall a dinner he attended with them for a police function some years back.

DICK LOCHER
My friend DICK LOCHER (Dick Tracy, Chicago Tribune Editorial cartoonist) was in the newspaper today. He designed a nine foot statue that will be dedicated October 4th, 2009 in Naperville (Where Locher resides). He assisted Chester Gould with the DICK TRACY comic strip from 1957 to 1961 and returned as the sole cartoonist in 1983. Gould was from Woodstock, IL.
