Rankin/Bass' Return to Oz (Premiered February 9th, 1964)

 This was actually Rankin/Bass Productions' first television special, Premiering on NBC's the General Electric Fantasy Hour on February 9th, 1964.  The Beatles made a big splash on The Ed Sullivan show too!   GE Tied in an OZ Bracelet with all of the characters on it, if you bought one of GE's irons or houseware products.

Though I have written about it in my books, many people don't realize that the General Electric Company not only sponsored the first three Rankin/Bass TV Specials on NBC, but they went on to form an Entertainment division called Tomorrow Entertainment, to sponsor the Rankin/Bass specials through 1974. I found my 1967 version of RUDOLPH today (After my friend Gena asked me to look for it :)) and am getting ready to watch it. This is THE GENERAL ELECTRIC FANTASY HOUR, after all the changes were made to the TV Spectacular, including adding the song and animation for FAME & FORTUNE and the new ending and trimming a few scenes. I love watching the 1967 version because, besides airing some new GENERAL ELECTRIC commercials, IDEAL TOYS stepped in as a co-sponsor and added some CRISSY doll commercials that are fun to watch!

From THE MAKING OF THE RANKIN/BASS HOLIDAY CLASSIC: RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER (MISER BROS PRESS) It never seems like Christmas without watching the RANKIN/BASS GE Commercials!

I was listening to THE DAYDREAMER soundtrack again tonight and absolutely love it! I really liked hearing MAURY LAWS talk about the early days of RANKIN/BASS again. I forgot he mentioned he did the music for the GENERAL ELECTRIC commercials in 1962 and 1963. These were not RANKIN/BASS animated commercials BUT they were Holiday commercials with the household products and there were three commercials with 6 minutes of music total. Very interesting stuff!
